Something old

January 29th, 2012 | Category: building,loos,skiing,snow,tokina 11-16,winter

I had originally planned to ski another stretch of the snow mobile trail from Hamra, but after almost getting stuck in the snow when parking my car yesterday, I didn’t feel like trying my luck. So I took the same old trail in Loos, the one which goes over three lakes, up to Ryggskog and then back to Loos. It’s a nice 12K trip and the most photogenic of all the routes I have in Loos, although of course the law of diminishing returns is eating into my results. What helps is the changing conditions and today the landscape was at its snowy best.

Initially it looked like the clouds would break up like they did yesterday, but the sun never showed itself so the light wasn’t a problem. And initially I wasn’t getting any interesting pictures done, I’m raising the bar by using the small Tokina wideangle and for some reason I just have trouble making it work in the snow. But like I said, I’ve taken a picture of almost every photogenic or semi-photogenic spot along the way, so I’m trying to create something different using the wideangle instead. Maybe I’ll get lucky.

And lucky indeed! When I got to Ryggskog, I finally decided to check out a deserted house that the trail passes. I’ve been looking at it for years, wondering if it’s safe to trespass… but with all this snow, it’s pretty obvious that nobody’s been at the house all winter so I didn’t worry about it any more. And am I glad that I did this! The place turned out to be a real gem. Maybe the house itself isn’t so fascinating, but there’s a few barns as well and as soon as I had a closer look at them, I knew that I just have to get back there in the summer. It’s bound to be even better with things growing in the garden, so now I just have to find out if the house is inhabited in the summer or if it’s free for me to shoot!

Summer for a moment

May 15th, 2010 | Category: building,loos,spring

WallIt’s been raining a lot since the night before Thursday. The ground is completely saturated and when the sun came out at around noon, the air was very humid which added to the warm sunshine – t-shirt warm! Without a shadow of a doubt, the warmest day of the year so far. But it’s just a blip in the weather, the raining will resume tomorrow and the temperatures will go down, but I didn’t really need that kind of encouragement to enjoy the good weather while it lasted. ChainI took a break from the flowers (which was easy because there aren’t that many around) and just walked around to see what’s happening in nature. And I wouldn’t go a whole day totally camera-less in these conditions, so I went to the Hembygdsgården in the evening to catch some building details in the warm light.

My favourite lily of the valley location is right next to Hembygdsgården so I had a look at them, the leaf buds are about 10cm tall already. And then I found a flower – a tiny common dog violet. Sweet!

Not as warm as you’d think

March 13th, 2010 | Category: building,camera,canon 24-105mm,rant

I hate to keep repeating myself but I seem to be coming no closer to end of my photographic slump. Spring is definitely on the way now, we’ve been having some warm days and the snow has started melting but it’s also been very windy and the snow is covered with wind blown debris. Maybe someone can take landscape pictures under these conditions, but not me. Seems like it’s April already, just with more snow. And I don’t like April.

Anyway, despite the conditions, I actually had a few ideas. I drove to Fågelsjö, equipped with both digital and film cameras, that’s how inspired I was! The afternoon sun was looking very nice and warm on the old buildings at Hembygdsgården. It looks warm anywayEmphasis on the word “look” – the wind was heavy and cold and I felt the inspiration sink along with my body temperature. But there was this one building in particular which looks gorgeous in the warm light so I set up the tripod and film camera and composed my picture and pressed the shutter and … nothing. How could this happen again?? My worst nightmare, press the shutter button and nothing happens. A closer inspection of the camera revealed that it’s probably a battery problem. The display is flashing “bc”, the manual says it can be the battery but it could also be a connection issue, with the lens or pretty much anything else. I tried another lens but it didn’t help, so either it’s the battery or then the camera is kaput. It’s not worth sending it to service in any case, so I hope I get away with the price of a new 2CR5.

Good thing I had both cameras with me then. I took the picture with digital instead and took off in search for more pictures. And found nothing. Nothing! I followed the snowmobile trail for a while but it was pointless. My plan was to wait for the sunset but I didn’t feel like standing around in Fågelsjö for an hour in the bitingly cold wind, so I decided to drive back home via Hamra, the road should take me to some viewpoints in case the sunset would be nice. And of course it wasn’t anything special now that I had a chance to shoot it. It’s been nice just about every evening this week, as I’ve seen from the bus window… but not today.

I promise I won’t complain in my next post! I probably won’t post anything until May…
