Vallåsen
Well, I did get out after all. In search of good aurora viewpoints, I took the small dirt road (emphasis on “dirt” –
you can’t drive it by car) that leads from Föne to the foot of the old abandoned ski slope at Vallåsen, which is the mountain that obscures the winter sun for my house. Will be interesting to see at which time in the winter the sun will be far enough in the west to show up itself. Anyway, I didn’t find anything at all suitable for northern views, or any other direction for that matter. Then I sized up the slope (three times the size of Furubacken, the slope in Loos) and decided to walk up, just to punish myself for being so lazy in the past weeks. The prize for my effort was the sunset, so I got to see the sun anyway!
If I recall correctly, there used to be some kind of opening towards North, but as that was many years ago, it may not be so any more.
What I definitely remember, is running uphill there once, trying to catch full moon, but 20kg on my shoulders and some clouds made me give up half way up
Wow. With 20 kg on my back, I wouldn’t even make it out of the house.
There is a big opening to the north, I did some scouting last year and found that they’ve done a lot of logging on the north-north-west side of the mountain (maybe that’s what you were referring to?). As far as the view is concerned, it’s just about the best you can get in this region. It’s a whole other matter how it would work in a picture, maybe I should check it now in the winter as well. The road is plowed all the way up to the top cabin so it’s not really necessary to walk up every time.
I think we are talking about the same spot. It worked nicely one summer at sunset. Then I started worrying a bit too much the cabing being occupied, would not really want to invade someones privacy…
The top cabin is for sale.
Well, it was for sale in the autumn… but I can’t see how anyone would buy it. It sure isn’t used right now, there’s only a small path in the snow around the house by people who’ve been checking the view. Would be a nice place to live, if it wasn’t for all the radio masts (they make awful noise in the wind). And I also heard that there’s a problem with running water, which is kind of understandable!
