Crocus blooms

Category: crocus,sigma 150mm

My crocuses are finally blooming! Or maybe they have been doing it for days… but they are always closed when I come home from work, and they stayed closed yesterday also as the sun didn’t come out until later in the afternoon when my crocus patch is already shaded.

Crocus bloom

The flowers feel like a colour explosion after a black and white winter. How I love flowers… flowers and a macro lens. Does it get any better?!

Wow, very good work with the dof in the first one! I guess you were playing with the bugzilla (150/2.8 Sigma), weren’t you?

Sigma 150mm indeed, my lens of choice for the coming season! I must say I’m very pleased with it so far, my only complaint is the focus speed which is pedestrian at best, but macro work is mostly done on manual focus anyway so it’s no biggie.

Bugzilla? That’s the first time I’ve heard it called that… took me a couple of seconds to make the connection, but yes, I’ve seen many bug shooters recommend this lens. :D

Minna, remember that you’re dealing with a macro lens there. Btw, Bugzilla has three-position focus limiter, use it when not shooting close-ups, it fastens the AF-speed tremendously.

Gee, is that what the switch does? :P

Seriously, the focus speed is slower compared to the Canon 100mm macro I had (which, by the way, also had a focus limiter switch). But since I’m primarily a flower photographer and rarely aim the camera at moving targets, focus speed is not an issue. The situation which prompted my original comment was when I had an OOF obstruction in front of the actual subject, so achieving autofocus was impossible (for any lens) but the lens hunted for it, and it just seemed to take quite a while. Which, come to think of it, is a good thing, because I often felt that the 100mm macro was too fast, LOL!

    Greetings -

Your photography is quite stunning. I would love to be able to use the 2nd image here on an announcement flyer for a ministry at my church. We have no budget to purchase image rights, but can give full credit on the flyer (and I can send you a copy). There is no money making associated with this, it’s just to raise awareness about the recovery ministry at our church.

Would it be okay if I used your photo? Please let me know.

    Thanks so much!
