Finding my voice in the silence of nature

Lot like winter

Category: bird,snow,squirrel

We got some real snow this week – not nearly as much as SMHI was forecasting, but enough to cover the landscape in a white coat and enough for the ski tracks. I’ll wait until my achy breaky back stops twinging before I get on the skis though, today I settled for a walk through the winter forest.

Cropped a little from bottom and right and cloned out of a piece of wire on the branch.

I finally caught a jay on sensor. I only managed two shots before it flew off, clearly bothered by the sound of the shutter. The squirrels on the other hand are not too bothered, in fact they seem get more tolerant of me and I can come within few meters before they finally run off. There were no less than three squirrels fighting over the sunflower seeds today, it was very entertaining to watch them chase each other up and down the trees. I even witnessed a squirrel falling down a tree – I thought it never happens… it landed in the soft snow and was back up the tree as fast as a lightning. In a squirrel fight, there’s always a loser so this one poor guy spent a while contemplating its fate and giving me a chance to play with light. One squirrel’s loss is one photographer’s gain…

Lucky you! We also got some but it melted away last night.
Nice light on your pictures! Have you ever tried to use a hide? It adds an interesting element into bird- and squirrel shooting. And yes, you gonna miss that 70-200 if you try it :P
I sold my 105VR and ordered Sigma 150 instead, hoping to get a good copy this time! Vr is basically of no use in macro shooting – at least for me and my style of shooting.

Actually I am using a hide – it’s a thick cardboard with a lens size hole in it, covering my open living room window. It serves two purposes, firstly it hides me and secondly it keeps the cold out (almost). But the problem is of course that it’s a very static setup (can’t move my house around!) and it’s not quiet close enough for the small birds. But it’s good enough to give me a taste for bird and squirrel photography so we’ll see…

You also got the 150mm macro? Cool! I still haven’t properly tested mine, all I can say so far is that it’s too heavy for handholding, which is bad, because I really am too lazy to use the tripod every time. So I guess I’ll just to have become a bit less lazy!

That is one seriously cool squirrel pic! Well, okay, the whole face could be in the light, but still. Thumbs up :)

What 70-200 is mr. rolsen speaking of?

The 70-200mm that I sold… to get the 150mm macro instead. I really hope I won’t be missing the zoom!

    Oh and thanks :)
