Nuthatches

Category: bird

I finally got some pictures of nuthatches! Not very good, granted, but it is a dark day so I had to dial up to ISO 800 and I still only got shutter speeds of 1/160 at best. Maybe next weekend then.

There were two individuals, but it was impossible to get them in the same frame. So the above picture is a composite, two OOF frames with motion blur with the stump as an anchor to tie them together. Either that, or delete…

I am somewhat astonished by the first one. Bad light? Does not look like that in this one :)

Second one… Well, if only birds’ bodies would’ve been sharp. Motion blur in wings would work otherwise very well.

    1. The light gives birth to a picture here.
    2. My eye searches for something sharp to get a grip, but meets only the tree. Would’ve been very nice with a bit sharper eye etc.

How do you like your new cam? High ISO performance seems to be ok regarding to tests I’ve read. I almost bought a 400/2.8 lens, but common sense won this time. 4,8kg is a bit too much for me to carry around.. That would’ve been a bargain though >:-(

    Thanks for the comments! :)

Yeah the light wasn’t too bad, overcast weather provides easy lighting conditions. Unless it’s too overcast like it was today, there just wasn’t enough light to go around. I normally never shoot ISO 800, I mean I don’t even like ISO 400. It just simply isn’t good enough for me if I can print a 4×6″ without visible grain. And it’s not just the grain, but the image also loses sharpness when the grain increases.

But I’m not going to fault the 40D with the grain. I like the camera, and some of the new features that I dismissed at first are really starting to grow on me, like the highlight tone priority.

The OOF flight picture – don’t take it too seriously! I was just playing with it, as a reminder of all the missed shots… 91 frames and 7 keepers (not counting this one). I could also have shown the many images I have of the stump, without a bird in sight, LOL!

    Rane – 400mm f2.8? Serious stuff…! I just ordered a Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, I will blog about it after I get it.
