Canon 40D
Amazon has leaked out the specs of the eagerly awaited 40D that many Canon shooters have speculated about since (or actually even before) the release of 30D. Looking at the specs, it looks like I will be missing out on 2 of the 3 features I had on my wish list. 3″ LCD yes, ISO 50 no, and channel histogram… well it isn’t specifically mentioned in the specs so I assume that it’s missing, otherwise they’d mention it as a new feature (or was it already included in 30D? I don’t know actually). But what I’ll get instead is improved weather sealing, I hadn’t even dared to hope for it. My camera rain guard has worked well, but it’s reassuring to know that some stray drops won’t damage the gear.
Considering that my 20D is still working fine and the increase from 8 to 10 MP is no big deal and I won’t get all the features I had hoped for, it’s a fair question to ask why I would want to upgrade my camera now. Well, a fair question for anyone who isn’t a photographer! I know I’m in for some serious queuing to get a new 40D…
Amazon pulled out the 40D page while I was writing this post, but someone over at dpreview was kind enough to take a screen shot. Canon should officially announce the camera tomorrow.

Hope that the weather sealing is something more than just the battery compartment :/ I doubt Nikon will publish anything this week..
Apparently they have added weather protection to some buttons as well as the compartments, but it’s not really weather sealed like the 1D beasts are.
I was digging around to find out if the channel histogram existed in 30D, and it does. I don’t think that Canon would’ve removed it from 40D. So I’m happy!
Now all I need is a little bit of patience, because I would like to hear some user reports before I invest my pennies in this beauty…
Oh and people keep saying that Nikon will have something new coming out, expected to announce it on Thursday 23rd.
Stop teasing!!
D200 is more than good for me for years and my wallet has the same opinion - Of course, if there’s gonna be a new chip with better DR and high ISO performance… Aaaargh!
My wallet just screamed in pain - D300 seems to have killer specs in paper…
Yeah I saw that… At first I was thinking that gosh it beats the 40D in all counts, then I read that Nikon will not discontinue the D200 but will keep it and sell the new D300 at a higher price, so the 40D and D300 are actually not competing in the same price class. But regardless, it will be very interesting to see what happens on the market now!
Too bad for you…
